Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie’s action-packed film, Mr. & Mrs. Smith, was a huge financial success, grossing over $478 million worldwide.
Despite mixed reception from critics and fans, Donald Glover is rebooting Mr. & Mrs. Smith as a television series for Amazon Prime, with a new cast.Phoebe Waller-Bridge dropped out of the project, and Maya Erskine has replaced her as Mrs. Jane Smith, starring opposite Donald Glover as Mr. John Smith.
Both Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie have taken on roles in action films before, so it came as no surprise when the two signed on for Mr. & Mrs. Smith, a film that is jam-packed action, including fight sequences, explosions, and gunfire as the two duked it out not only against each other but also their respective agencies.The people behind the film tried to have a sequel made, but it did not seem that a captivating enough storyline could be found to justify a second film.This did not stop creative minds from attempting to convert the film into a television show starring Jordana Brewster, of Fast & Furious fame, and Martin Henderson, most known for his time on Grey’s Anatomy.
Unfortunately for Brewster and Henderson, ABC did not end up picking up the pilot for the show, and it fell by the wayside. Now it seems that Amazon Prime Studios is willing to give a Mr. & Mrs. Smith series a shot with none other than Donald Glover, aka Childish Gambino, lending not only his creative mind to the series but his acting talents as well, without the involvement of the actors from the original film.
Mr. & Mrs. Smith Was Released In 2005
Mr. & Mrs. Smith is the story of two assassins that marry each other, but have also been contracted to kill each other. The film follows the pair through discovering the truth about their marriage while also depicting the characters falling in love with each other all over again.
The action-packed film did a great job showing off the chemistry between Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt, who met each other for the first time on set and went on to marry and parent several children together.At the time of its release, Mr. & Mrs. Smith grossed a total of $478,207,520 worldwide, making it both Brad and Angelina’s highest-grossing film at that time and ranking high during its opening weekend.Despite its financial success, the film had an overall mediocre reception among critics and fans. Rotten Tomatoes shows the film with a 58% average audience score, taken from a total of over 250,000 reviews, and a 60% critics score.For the most part, many agreed that the chemistry between the two was undeniable, but criticized the film’s poor writing and apparent overuse of explosions; however, it apparently has enough potential for the likes of Donald Glover to want to reboot it as a television show.
Donald Glover, Childish Gambino, Is Co-Creator On The Series
Donald Glover has carved out a career for himself as a television and film writer and producer, actor, comedian, and musician. His first major gig was on the show 30 Rock as a writer and editor from 2008 through 2009.He eventually went on to be the showrunner and executive producer of the hit FX series Atlanta and also produced Guava Island, which starred both him and Rihanna as the main characters. Glover intends on using his skills to bring Mr. & Mrs. Smith to the small screen via Amazon Prime.News of a Mr. & Mrs. Smith remake got a lukewarm reception, with many disappointed that it is yet another Hollywood reboot, as opposed to an original concept. Fans let their disdain for the idea be known on social media platforms, especially on X (formerly Twitter).
Fans may not be thrilled about rehashing Mr. & Mrs. Smith with a new cast and crew involved, but the head of Amazon Studios Jennifer Salke feels very optimistic about what Glover has in store for his take on the story.Donald Glovers Mr. & Mrs. Smith was supposed to be released in 2022 but seems to have gotten its release pushed back to late 2023, likely because of changes in casting and possible delays due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
What We Know About The Cast Of The Mr. And Mrs. Smith Reboot So Far
While few plot details of the Mr. & Mrs. Smith reboot have been released, information about the cast is already readily available. When the project was announced, it had Phoebe Waller-Bridge of Solo: A Star Wars Story and Fleabag fame set to play Mrs. Jane Smith.She ended up dropping out of the project in late 2021 due to “creative differences” and was replaced by Maya Erskine. Erskine is best known for her work in PEN15, Bob’s Burgers, and Obi-Wan Kenobi and will star opposite Donald Glover himself, who is taking on the role of Mr. John Smith.
