A new milestone has just been set on the Riviera golf course. Hideki Matsuyama recorded the lowest score of a title Sunday at the Genesis Invitational, helping him set the record and achieve more.

Matsuyama excelled with a total of 9 birdies in the fourth round that decided the championship.The Japanese golfer scored 3 consecutive birdies in the first 3 holes. He scored his second “hat-trick” of the day at holes 10-12.Matsuyama affirmed his absolute dominance with 3 other birdies in the last 3 holes, causing his main opponents to almost give up.

The 62 strokes on Sunday is not only a record at Riviera, with the event organized by the legendary Tiger Woods, but also the best achievement of an Asian golfer.

The spectacular performance helped Matsuyama have a total score of -17 (267 strokes after 4 days of competition). He won by 3 strokes against his two pursuing opponents, Will Zalatoris and Luke List.

This is the 31-year-old golfer’s first PGA Tour title since winning the Sony Open event with a total score of -23 in January 2023 (winning against Russell Henley in the play-off).Matsuyama has been struggling with injuries for nearly 2 years, since the Arnold Palmer Invitational event in March 2022.Since that time, The Masters 2021 champion has only reached the top 10 of the PGA Tour events he attended 6 times, and last week was pushed out of the top 50 world rankings.
