Meghan Markle and Kate Middleton enjoyed a day out to Wimbledon in 2019 before their relationship turned sour but the Duchess of Sussex was keen to shed light on the day
Meghan Markle and Princess Kate appeared to have the perfect relationship on the exterior.
In 2019, the future Queen and Duchess of Sussex enjoyed a cosy day out at the Wimbledon tournament as the two sports fans put on a united front.
The Princess of Wales, 41, is the patron of the All England Lawn Tennis Club and has been since 2016, often making an appearance at the annual event.
Over the years, it’s been reported that the two royals’ relationship had soured with Princess Kate allegedly making Meghan, 41, cry in the run-up to her wedding to Prince Harry.
Although the pair appeared to be at ease with one another, with Meghan sitting alongside Pippa Middleton, 40, things were not as they seemed on the exterior.
At the time, it was claimed that the two royals were growing apart with an alleged rift between the Waleses (then Cambridge’s) and Sussexes after they stepped back from The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and Prince Harry. Harry, 39, claimed in his memoir, Spare, that he, Prince William, Kate and Meghan came together in their former home, Nottingham Cottage, to discuss Kate allegedly confessing to making Meghan cry.
Although Meghan and Kate only often appeared alongside one another at official engagements such as Trooping the Colour and Royal outings, Wimbledon appeared to be the perfect day for them to put their feud to bed as they were seen laughing with one another. However, Meghan later claimed that all was not as rosy as it may have looked to spectators.
In 2021, the Duchess sat down with US chat show host Oprah Winfrey to discuss stepping back from working royal life as well as the alleged feuds and drama she had faced since marrying into the House of Windsor. Oprah asked: “Did you feel welcomed by everyone? It seemed like you and Kate… at the Wimbledon game where you were going to watch a friend play tennis…
“Was it what it looked like? You are two sisters-in-law out there in the world, getting to know each other. Was she helping you, embracing you into the family, helping you adjust?” “I think everyone welcomed me,” Meghan commented. But in a scathing outburst, she went on to say: “When you say, ‘Was it what it looked like?’ my understanding and my experience of the past four years is, it’s nothing like what it looks like.
“It’s nothing like what it looks like.” Meghan went on to address an alleged conversation she had with a member of the Royal Family about being “everywhere”. She told Winfrey: “There was a day that one of the members of the family, she came over, and she said, ‘Why don’t you just lay low for a little while, because you are everywhere right now.’ And I said, ‘I’ve left the house twice in four months, I’m everywhere but I am nowhere.”
