A trio of Oakland high schoolers thought they’d already peaked when they met Stephen Curry — and then Curry called Kevin Durant.
Darion, Ramon and Sideek, student-athletes at McClymonds High, were invited to guest on the latest episode of Curry’s YouTube series, 5 Minutes From Home;
Curry has a long-standing relationship with McClymonds and the school’s basketball coach, Adrian McCullough.
The teens were chatting with Curry on the way to a food truck in Oakland when Curry dialed up a friend to join the conversation.
Sideek is particularly excited to see Durant pop up on FaceTime, exclaiming that KD works out at a practice facility near Sideek’s gym.
“You can kick it with me, and I got a car, don’t worry about it,” Sideek says to raucous laughter. “I can pick you up. It’s probably not the fastest car, but it’s gonna get us where we need to go.”
He also tells Durant he’s been a fan of his since his Oklahoma City days and never stopped supporting him when he moved to California.
“You’re one of the last ones left,” Durant jokes.
The conversation also takes a serious turn, as Ramon and Darion open up about the losses they’ve experienced in recent years. Both list multiple family members and friends who have passed away, tragic circumstances that would test anyone, let alone two teenagers.
“I know right now, they’re in heaven telling me to do better. I just know that they’re in a good place, and this whole time I’ve just been thinking about them and working even harder,” Darion says. “This year, I got a 2.9 [GPA] and I’m trying to bring my grades up.
“I’m only in the ninth grade, so I still have a long life to live.”
Their stories clearly affect Curry, who is taken aback by their quiet resilience.
“I learned a lot from y’all when y’all are telling your stories,” Curry says. “I don’t think I’ve gone through tragedy like that, in the sense of it being so close to home and you being forced to grow up fast.
“That’s a strong testament to your character that you guys have and the willingness to deal with that head-on and not shy away from it.”
