It’s been one year since Jenna Ortega’s rumored romance with Johnny Depp made headlines — and she still can’t believe the “insane” speculation.
While speaking to BuzzFeed Monday about the “craziest” headline she’s seen about herself, the actress replied, “Probably that I was in a serious relationship with Johnny Depp and I wanted everybody to leave us alone.
“I never spoke on that. I never said anything like that,” the “Wednesday” star, 21, clarified, admitting that she found the rumors “pretty hilarious” at the time.
“I was on set with Richard E. Grant and he came up to me and he said, ‘Oh, so you and Johnny,’” Ortega recalled. “I laughed because I don’t know that person.”
Depp’s rep said the same during the September 2023 gossip.
“Mr. Depp has no personal or professional relationship with Miss Ortega whatsoever. He has never met her or spoken to her,” the 61-year-old’s spokesperson said.
“He is not involved in any project with her, nor does he intend to be,” the statement continued. “He is appalled by these baseless and malicious rumors that are intended to harm his reputation and career.”
The Daily Mail claimed that Ortega denied the relationship in an Instagram Story post before deleting the upload.
“I can’t even laugh,” the “Scream” star allegedly wrote. “I have never met or worked with Johnny Depp in my life. Please stop spreading lies and leave us alone.”
The speculation started over a Deuxmoi post claiming the duo had been spotted together and were potentially working on “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice.”
Ortega is currently doing press for the movie, which premieres Sept. 6 — and does not include Depp in the cast.
The “Jane the Virgin” alum told “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon” viewers last week how “terrified” she was to take on Winona Ryder’s character Lydia Deetz’s daughter, Astrid.
“Never in my wildest dreams. I just never could have anticipated something like that happening,” she said. “Lydia is the coolest character on the planet.”
Ryder, 52, confessed to Slash Film on Sunday that she “never pictured” her character from the original 1988 film being married with a child.
The “Stranger Things” alum added that she came around after “bond[ing] with” Ortega and meeting Justin Theroux, who plays her onscreen husband, Rory.
