The ‘flying boot’ incident between manager Alex Ferguson and David Beckham has been over 20 years but its echoes are still there.
It was after the defeat to Arsenal in the fifth round of the FA Cup, the Scottish strategist kicked his boot into David Beckham’s left eyelid and the midfielder had to get stitches there.
More than two decades on, Roy Keane has now shed some new light on the incident.
The former Man United captain spoke to Sky Sports in detail about what happened in the dressing room that day.
‘I think Becks was somewhere over there, near the mirror. Sir Alex Ferguson has apologised to him for not hearing what Beckham said,
it was an accident but he (Sir Alex Ferguson) threw it very well although to be honest it was unfortunate.’
‘If it had been anyone else it would have been fine but Becks was very popular at the time, but it all happened in the dressing room. I loved all that stuff.’
It was later revealed that Ferguson had been aiming at a pile of clothes on the dressing room floor, not Beckham. Regardless, the incident happened and the England midfielder made headlines and then left.
David Beckham is now the president of Inter Miami and admitted in a Netflix series last year that he lost his temper and tried to attack Sir Alex Ferguson after the incident.
‘I went and I gestured to my forehead and I realised I was bleeding, and then I got up and it happened (referring to the action of charging at Ferguson).’
