Angelina Jolie said one of the reasons she made the movie First They Killed My Father: A Daughter of Cambodia Remembers was because of her eldest son, little Maddox.
Angelina Jolie will return to Cambodia to start working on her Netflix project with the movie First They Killed My Father
A Daughter of Cambodia Remembers – a film in which she will take on the role of producer, director, and screenwriter.
Maddox, Jolie’s oldest son who is of Cambodian descent, will be her co-producer in this film.
In a recent conversation with the Guardian, Angelina Jolie said part of the reason she wanted to do this project was so that Maddox could learn about his homeland.
Where he was born: “I want him to understand the country.” What Cambodia is like and I want us to help the world understand what a Cambodian family is like.”
The 40-year-old actress said she gave her son time to think before deciding to participate in the film project. “This movie is based on the story of a friend of ours,” Jolie told her son. Those were the experiences of that girl between the ages of 5 and 9, when the Khmer Rouge occupied her.”
“A few months ago he came and told me he was ready to do something and I was quite surprised” – Angelina Jolie added.
Jolie also believes that the experiences of the character in the movie First They Killed My Father: A Daughter of Cambodia Remembers are most likely experiences that Maddox’s biological parents had.
