Jennifer Lopez unveils the true cause for her tour’s cancellation: ‘Ben Affleck frightened me, prompting an instant return home!’ (video)

After spending more than thirty years in showbusiness, Jennifer Lopez has had her fair share of highs and lows.

The industry veteran, now 54, is currently in the midst of one of her worst lulls yet thanks to a flop album – the deeply personal This is Me…

Now – a tour that’s just been shelved, and rumored issues in her marriage to Ben Affleck.

Then there’s her decision to self-finance a disastrous $20million movie-musical vanity project about her ‘love story’ with Affleck – which bemused critics have called ‘bizarre’.

Many have been quick to write Lopez off following her latest string of career blunders, but nobody should count Jenny From the Block out just yet.

While she’s had plenty of box office bombs, dud singles, and relationship woes over the years, Lopez has bounced back from disaster every time.

The Bronx-born diva’s first major flop came in 2003 when she starred alongside then-boyfriend Affleck in Gigli.

The romantic comedy was a critical and commercial calamity, eventually becoming one of the most expensive flops in history after grossing just $7.2 million against a $75.6 million budget.

It also ended the career of famed Beverly Hills Cop director Martin Brest, who hasn’t worked a job in Hollywood since.

Some feared that the film would end Lopez’s career too, but she made a swift rebound with Monster-In-Law alongside Jane Fonda.

Despite critics slamming the comedy – with many singling out Lopez’s performance as particularly bad – its huge commercial success was seen as a major comeback for the star.

While her music career was starting to take a downturn by 2005, Lopez managed to stay relevant thanks to her hit single Get Right, which became her second No. 1 hit in the UK.

Sadly, her box office comeback was short lived as she attempted to pivot from the success of the frothy Monster-In-Law with a trio of ill-fated dramas.

An Unfinished Life with Robert Redford and the gritty crime drama Bordertown both flopped, but it was her role alongside then-husband Marc Antony in 2006’s El Cantante that became Lopez’s biggest cinematic embarrassment since Gigli.

Intended to be a serious awards movie, the biographical film about late salsa legend Héctor Lavoe was savaged by critics – especially in Latin America – and was a failure at the box office.

Lopez later complained that she should have won an Oscar for her role as Puchi Roman, telling Latina magazine, ‘I feel like I had that [Oscar worthy role] in El Cantante, but I don’t even think the academy members saw it.’

While things looked dire for the star, she was able to regain a lot of her Latin fanbase with the release of her 2007 Spanish-language album Como Ama una Mujer.

The lead single, co-written and produced by Marc Antony, became a big hit for Lopez, topping Billboard’s Latin charts and also reaching No. 1 in Italy, Spain and Croatia.

The same year, her fifth English-language album Brave became her first to miss the top 10, so the star took a break from both music and acting to focus on raising her twins Emme and Max.

Not one to rest on her laurels, JLo spent much of her break quietly plotting her next big comeback.

By 2010, she’d topped the box office again with the lighthearted rom-com The Back-up Plan, but it was her decision to join American Idol’s tenth season as a judge that really put her back on the map.

While it was seen as a huge risk at the time for a star of Lopez’s stature to join a talent show – a gig originally occupied by has-beens in the twilight years of their career – the move paid off in a big way.

JLo had earned a reputation as an out-of-touch diva with a messy love life and a big ego, but Idol let her showcase a much warmer side of herself to an audience of 25million people each week.

She won over viewers with her friendly but constructive criticism for contestants, and brought plenty of glamor to the judging panel with her natural beauty and designer outfits.

To capitalize on her primetime position, JLo jumped into the studio with hitmaker-of-the-moment RedOne to record a new single – On The Floor featuring Miami rapper Pitbull.

At this point in her music career, expectations were bleak for JLo the pop star.

It had been five years since her last real hit and she’d been dropped by longtime label Epic Records after her single Louboutins flopped.

However, perhaps buoyed by the mammoth Idol audience, On The Floor defied all expectations and skyrocketed up the charts almost immediately.

The song’s fresh dance beats brought Lopez into the 2010s after she’d spent years chasing the urban-pop sound of her early albums, and it wasn’t long before the tune had climbed to No. 3 on the Hot 100.

It eventually became the biggest hit of her career, reaching No. 1 across Europe, Latin America, and Australia, and racking up over two billion views on YouTube.

Keen to milk her musical comeback for all it was worth, Lopez ditched her Idol gig after just two seasons so that she could launch her first world tour.

She also jumped back in the studio with RedOne and Pitbull to rehash On The Floor with the nearly identical Dance Again, which ended up going platinum and became another sizeable hit for the singer.

Lopez returned to Idol in 2014 after wrapping up the tour and wasted no time revamping her acting career too.

She found box office success with the tawdry 2015 thriller The Boy Next Door, which grossed $52million from a paltry $4million budget.

Lopez then left idol for a second time in 2016 to headline the NBC crime drama Shades of Blue with Ray Liotta.

In 2017, she also launched her own reality TV competition World of Dance on NBC, and then landed another box office hit in 2018 with the rom-com Second Act.

Riding high on renewed success as an actress, JLo took another shot at Oscar glory with the stripper crime caper Hustlers.

While the film ultimately failed to nab the star an Academy Award nomination, it became a box office hit and earned Lopez some of the best reviews of her career.

In 2020, she reached another major career milestone by co-headlining the Super Bowl LIV halftime show with Shakira.

Perhaps feeling unstoppable after years of career wins, JLo then attempted her most ambitious project yet.

After rekindling her romance with Affleck – who she finally married in 2022 – Lopez started plotting her first album in ten years, This Is Me… Now, which would be accompanied by both a sprawling movie musical and an intimate behind-the-scenes documentary.

Unable to find funding for the project, she coughed up her own cash to pay for the $20million vanity project.

This Is Me… Now: A Love Story was released on February 16, along with the accompanying album.

Despite the bucket loads of publicity that the film generated, it failed to translate into album sales, with This Is Me… Now limping onto the Billboard 200 at No. 38 before dropping off the charts completely.

Things have also fared poorly for the album’s North American tour, This Is Me… Live.

After multiple concerts were canceled amid sluggish ticket sales, JLo ended up officially yanking the entire tour on Friday.

DailyMail.com was given a statement on the cancelation. ‘Representatives for Live Nation announced today that the Jennifer Lopez US Summer 2024 Tour THIS IS ME…LIVE is canceled.

‘Jennifer is taking time off to be with her children, family and close friends,’ it was added.

Lopez also issued her own statement, ‘I am completely heartsick and devastated about letting you down.

‘Please know that I wouldn’t do this if I didn’t feel that it was absolutely necessary.

‘I promise I will make it up to you and we will all be together again. I love you all so much. Until next time.’

Now the rumor mill is claiming that a potential $90million Las Vegas residency that Lopez had in the works could be canceled too.

Back in February, reports hit the web that the Jenny From the Block songstress, 54, was being eyed for 90-show residency at the The Park MGM Theater in Sin City – for which she was reportedly being offered $1 million per concert.

The New York Post has now claimed that the ‘deal looks shaky at best’ – with a source claiming that ‘casino executives have grown skittish’ since the singer’s new album and tour are ‘flopping badly.’

The source told the publication, ‘MGM is watching her not doing well on the road. They are very nervous. It’s pretty rare you have a poor tour and then go to Vegas.’

The insider further theorized that the lack of ticket sales will likely lead to her being paid significantly less for the residency – only $600,000-$500,000 per show – and that it will include less concerts than the 90 shows that were originally planned.

Another insider added that ‘discussions have continued’ with JLo and MGM but that ‘no deal has been signed’ yet.

Meanwhile, her self-titled skincare brand, JLo Beauty, was just dropped from Sephora stores in March.

She’s also reportedly dealing with issues in her marriage to Affleck – with some suggesting that they could be headed for divorce.

While naysayers might say that Lopez’s career is on its last legs, think again.

The tenacious diva has returned from the brink of irrelevancy many times over, proving that she knows exactly how to stage the perfect comeback.

Her latest savvy maneuver has been to bring her star power to streaming services instead of chasing success at the box office or desperately vying for prestigious awards.

Lopez’s first big streaming hit was 2022’s Marry Me, which became the most-streamed day-and-date title on Peacock.

She followed it up with Shotgun Wedding on Amazon Prime and then the action-packed The Mother on Netflix.

The Mother topped the streamer’s in-house Top 10 list for four consecutive weeks and went on to become one of the top ten most-watched films in Netflix history.

She released another Netflix film, the sci-fi blockbuster Atlas, over Memorial Day weekend, and it became another huge hit for the Waiting For Tonight hitmaker.

Atlas shot straight to the top of the Netflix charts and quickly cracked the top ten in 93 countries.

It’s hard to predict how long Lopez will continue her winning streak as an A-list streaming starlet, or even if her marriage will last.

One thing is for certain though – no matter what happens, JLo will be back with another man, another album, and another movie.

If we’ve learned anything from the female stars that Lopez so clearly models herself after – like Cher and Barbara Streisand – it’s that you can’t keep a good diva down.
