Since splitting from Brad Pitt, Angelina Jolie has had to continue raising their six children alone, and there’s definitely been an adjustment period for the entire family.
Being in the press practically since birth, Jolie’s children have had an interesting upbringing.
But Jolie was made to be a mom, and even though she might not know how to be a homemaker, her children love her anyway.
Even before having any biological children, she wanted to be a mother to less fortunate children and help them all over the world with her charity work.
Jolie has adopted three children, along with having three biological children with Pitt, and we’ve watched all of them grow up into teenagers over the years.
But how is Jolie’s first daughter, Zahara, doing these days?
Jolie was already an experienced adoptive parent by the time she adopted Zahara. By then she’d already adopted her son Maddox in 2002.
But after seeing six-month-old, Zahara Marley, in an Ethiopian orphanage in 2005, Jolie started the adoption process again. In 2006, Pitt co-adopted her as well as her brother Maddox.
Originally Jolie thought that Zahara was an AIDS baby, meaning her biological mother had died of AIDS.
During a trip to Namibia in 2009, Jolie told journalist, Ann Curry, “[Zahara’s] mother died of Aids and so, they wouldn’t have had any funds to send her to school.”
But in 2017, Zahara’s birth mother came forward, explaining she wanted to see her daughter and support Jolie in the custody battle after her split from Pitt.
Mentewab Dawit Lebiso said she gave Zahara, born as Yemsrach, up for adoption because she was a victim of rape. There was no way of raising her because her family disowned when they found out.
“I just want her to know that I am alive and here and long to be able to speak with her. I do not want my daughter back but just to be in contact with her and be able to call her up and talk with her,” Lebiso said.
Even though Lebiso is thankful that Jolie has given her daughter a better life than she would have, she still misses her daughter every day.
“Angelina has been more of a mother to her than I have ever been. She has been with her since she was a baby, but that does not mean I do not miss her.
“I miss her all the time. I think about her every day and long to hear her voice or see her face. I know when she has a birthday but I am sad because I can’t celebrate it with her.
I would so much want to celebrate with her on her birthday and other special days.
“I would like Zahara to know she has a mother who loves her as much as Angelina. She has a life that I could never give her, but I would still like to have some contact.
I would like to see her face. She has grown into a beautiful woman and I am so proud of her. My heart bursts because I am so proud.”
There’s no word on whether Zahara will meet with her birth mother.
Jolie once explained that Zahara’s laugh gives her the most happiness in the world. “She is one of those people who laughs with her whole body. Completely open and full of joy,” Jolie said.
Already, at just 15, Zahara is exhibiting signs of following in her mother’s footsteps in humanitarian work.
During a New Years’ holiday, the family spent time in Zahara’s native Ethiopia and got to meet with the country’s first female president, Sahle-Work Zewde.
Zahara left no room for small talk and got right down to business with the leader to talk about some important issues she has.
Apparently they talked about a number of health and academic-related issues for girls in Ethiopia, including girls education, sanitary pad solutions, and drug-resistant tuberculosis, which is a problem in the country.
Jolie has expressed how proud she is of her daughter. “My daughter is from Ethiopia, one of my children … And I have learned so much from her.
She is my family, but she is an extraordinary African woman and her connection to her country, her continent, is her own and it’s something I only stand back in awe of.”
Zahara has also started to follow her mother into the acting world as well.
Along with her brother Pax, she had an uncredited role in Jolie’s Maleficent and also lent her voice for the small part of Meng Meng, in Kung Fu Panda: 3.
We’re not sure whether acting is exactly what Zahara is looking to go into, but with her parents, all she really needs to do is say the word and she’ll have tons of projects lined up.
Zahara is more interested in humanitarian projects though and has even started her own jewelry line, Zahara Collection, with Robert Procop.
All of the proceeds go to House of Ruth Shelter, an organization that provides housing to battered women and children.
When Zahara is not trying to save the world with her mother or accompanying her parents on red carpets, she’s living as private a teenaged life as she can.
One thing’s for sure, Jolie did a great job raising her, along with the rest of her brood.
