Back in the ‘90s and early 2000s, Beckham and his wife, Victoria, were infamously made the subject of cruel headlines in the press, 

many of which singled out the former Spice Girl with a particularly misogynistic bent. 

Their troubled relationship with the media was chronicled in Netlix’s four-part documentary, Beckham.

“Hopefully that’s improved,” Beckham told Variety of the media’s treatment towards players’ wives and girlfriends (WAGs). “It’s ridiculous that we’re even talking about it,” he lamented.

“I think back in the day with Victoria going to games, the fans were quite brutal,” Beckham said. “They sang songs about her.”

But Beckham believes this generation’s stars are better equipped to handle such relentless attention. 

“I’m sure Taylor’s strong enough to handle whatever,” he said of singer Taylor Swift, who often finds herself the subject of media attention at boyfriend Travis Kelce’s football games.

Beckham believes younger celebrities have an easier time of addressing these issues now than he did coming up almost 30 years ago. “I think that my takeaway from my documentary was how important mental health is,” Beckham reflected.

“20 years ago, nobody was talking about it. And nobody was taking it seriously. Now, it’s so great that people can actually talk about their feelings,” he continued. “There were many things said about us over the 27 years. It can be hurtful…It wasn’t easy.”
