Gavin and Stacey star James Corden got his priorities in order as he delayed the start of his West End theatre performance so he could watch England’s Euros victory
James Corden showed where his priorities were on Saturday night as he delayed his theatre performance to catch England’s Euros match.
The Gavin and Stacey star is currently on London’s West End as part of new political play The Constituent.
He is starring alongside Line of Duty’s Anna Maxwell Martin in the 1,000 capacity venue. However, he postponed the start of the play this weekend so he could catch all the football action.
The Three Lions took on Switzerland in a tense game that saw the match end 1-1, but emerged victorious after beating their opponents in a nail-biting penalty shootout.
James was among those cheering on Gareth Southgate’s squad and couldn’t bare to miss any of the action.
He was so invested in the game, he took along his iPad to the centre of the theatre stage and delayed the show by 15 minutes. One woman in the audience admitted she couldn’t believe what she saw after spotting James holding his iPad at the side of the stage just before the show.
She explained to Metro: “Then he came out as the crowd started calling him and he brought the iPad out on stage and he and his co-star streamed the penalties. It started buffering so a man on the front row started filling James in on what was happening. James told him to come over with his phone and they all started watching it on stage together!”
Footage showed James crouched on the floor in front of the packed audience as he streamed the game on a tiny screen. He had his arm around an audience member as they watched on nervously. When England secured their victory, James couldn’t contain his excitement as he jumped to his feet and celebrated with his arms in the air.
The crowd also joined in the cheers as some shared the experience on social media. One said: “This is James Corden watching the penalty shoot out in the England vs Switzerland match on stage before the play he stars in, The Constituent, @oldvictheatre starts. The audience roared approval, especially when England won. The play was excellent as well!”
Another added: “absolutely dying that i’ve just seen a video of the constituent tonight and james corden and zach hart were on stage with a tablet watching the england penalties before starting the show tonight, sometimes this country is good.” Someone else commented: “James Corden delayed the start of his play at the old Vic tonight by talking us through the penalties on his iPad. What fun!”
James wasn’t the only star getting on on the England action as broadcaster Piers Morgan offered his thoughts on the game. Posting a picture of player of the match Bukayo Saka, he commented: “England’s hero…,” and after the penalties Piers said: “BOOOOOOM! Never in doubt… what a great set of penalties. Well done England.” EastEnders star Ross Kemp posted a clip on X as he shared his excitement and added: “Well done boys @England onto the semi final!”
