Cardi B has hit back after an American magazine accused her of homophobia based on comments she made about the new Netflix series Baby Reindeer.
The American rapper, 31, recently posted about her experience of watching the new miniseries from Richard Gadd, which left her feeling ‘traumatised’ and ‘freaked out’.
In her social media update, she discussed a particularly harrowing scene midway through Baby Reindeer in which Richard Gadd’s Donny is sexually assaulted.
As a response, the aspiring comedian then begins having sex with numerous people of both sexes to, as in Cardi’s words, ‘identify what he likes’.
But it was a line in the middle of her reaction that caused a huge stir – soon after, HipHopDX magazine accused Cardi of claiming that homosexuality can be caused by sexual assault.
Initially, the WAP hitmaker said: ‘Not everybody is born gay. You see in that episode – the guy, he was straight.
And he got raped and he started going through these emotions of identity.’
She continued: ‘He started having crazy sex with women, he started having crazy sex with men. He just wanted to identify what he likes, all because he got sexually assaulted.’
Now, the Finesse rapper has hit back amid accusations against HipHopDX, with fans and onlookers accusing the magazine of deliberately twisting her words.
Cardi, whose real name is Belcalis Cephus, said: ‘Wow. This headline is so misleading for something that is so serious. I was talking about the show Baby Reindeer! Here’s the live for context!’

‘I believe there’s some men that are born gay. I have a cousin that I just knew since he was two years old he was gay. And there’s men that get sexually assaulted then they find out they are gay.’
She continued: ‘People are always going to be judgmental, people are always going to not accept them. Sometimes people don’t even know their story or how they got there.’
Fans on social media accused the magazine of ‘staying up all night trying to twist Cardi’s words to form a narrative’, while another asked: ‘How long until y’all delete this post and article? Or do y’all wanna be hit with that defamation lawsuit?’
Some of those watching the show on Netflix have admitted that the events of the series, which sees a man become the victim of stalking after a chance encounter, have left them paranoid about meeting nice people in public.
Dubbed the ‘Baby Reindeer effect’, one viewer, Alessia, described it: ‘Yeah, I’m never gonna be nice to any of you anymore – Baby Reindeer made me paranoid.’
