Woods, 48, opened up on the subject of his children in an appearance on TODAY as he promoted the official launch of his new clothing and apparel line Sun Day Red.
The launch has not gone down too well as some fans have accused the 15-time major champion of ripping off customers whilst making a huge swing and a miss.
Woods is charging as much as $175 for a polo shirt – and it’s not even red!
“She has a negative connotation to the game,” Woods said when asked why Samantha, 16, never expressed an interest in picking up a club.
“At that time, growing up, when she was growing up, golf took daddy away from her.
“I had to pack and I had to leave and I’d be gone for weeks so we’ve developed our own relationship [and] our own rapport that’s outside of golf.
“Meanwhile, my son and I we do all things golf related so it’s very different.”
Woods’ son Charlie, 15, appears intent on becoming a professional golfer.
He has already played in pre-qualifiers for PGA Tour events and most recently tried to get into the 2024 U.S. Open, which will be staged at Pinehurst.
Charlie fell at the first hurdle but it’s all part of the learning experience.
Before that, he made a surprise appearance at Augusta National on the final day of the 2024 Masters.
Woods ultimately finished dead last but was given a last-minute golf lesson by Charlie.
Woods said his son was helping him ‘get his hips to move’ as it is something that he has struggled with after his 2021 car crash.
“Since my accident my right leg doesn’t work that well,” he said. “So I have a hard time with that, I tend to slide.
“When I slide, I tend to hit these blocks [and] I’m trying to get that out of my system.
“He [Charlie], puts the club there to incentivize me to turn.”
Despite not wanting to play golf, Samantha is a very keen soccer player.
Understandably, her father and mother Elin Nordegren have attempted to keep her away from the limelight.
But she did take centre stage in March 2022 when she inducted her father into golf’s hall of fame.
Woods wept as Samantha told him she’d inducted him into the ‘dad hall of fame’ years ago.
“In 2007, my dad got himself in position to make an 18-foot putt to force a U.S. Open playoff, which he missed by a foot,” she said.
“He then had to rush to the airport, flew from Pittsburgh to Orlando and drove to the Winnie Palmer Hospital.
“Within five minutes of walking into the hospital room, still wearing his red golf shirt, on June 18th, I was born.
“He may have lost that day, but he won the greatest gift of all.”
Of Woods’ car crash, she added: “We didn’t know if you’d come home with two legs or not.
“Now not only are you about to be inducted into the hall of fame, but you’re standing here on your own two feet.
“This is why you deserve this, because you’re a fighter.”
