House of the Dragon fans have been left feeling emotional after realising Daemon Targaryen’s words to Ser Simon Strong may have had a second meaning.
After the third episode of House of the Dragon, fans speculate they’ve uncovered the “heartbreaking” hidden meaning behind Daemon Targaryen’s warning to Ser Simon Strong.
In episode 3, season 2 of the Game of Thrones spin-off show, Daemon encounters an unexpectedly warm welcome when he arrives at Harrenhal.
Entering the castle with his sword drawn for a battle, he finds Ser Strong calm, surrendering and pledging loyalty to Queen Rhaenyra Targaryen.
Hilariously, after pledging his house to them both, he even says: “Supper is venison with black cabbage and peas – no red currant, sorry about that.”
This leaves Daemon, who is always keen for a good and bloody battle, looking rather disappointed. While dinner with the Strong family is a civil affair, Daemon is left with the impression that the lands around Harrenhal have become unruly out of sight of the crown.
He also appears irritated by the Strong family’s relaxed attitude and unwillingness to restore their once-great home. During the episode, we also learn that Old Grover Tully is ancient and barely conscious, with his bannermen becoming fractious and out of hand as a result.
When Strong explains the situation with Tully to Daemon over the dinner table, however, the royal looks unexpectedly pained.
He states firmly: “I will speak with him nonetheless. People should obey their liege lord… Whatever his condition.”
Taking to Reddit, fans of the HBO show were quick to point out that Daemon might also have been making a reference to his late brother Viserys I Targaryen (Paddy Considine).
Viserys ruled peacefully, but in a state of ill health, for many years up until his death shortly before the end of season 1.
Cutting together the season from season 2 with a scene of Daemon visiting his decrepit brother on the throne in the first season, @CapableArgument5939 wrote: “A Heartbreaking Moment.”
