Madonna and Rihanna are similar in many ways: both are strong, stylish and fiercely independent women.

Who have reinvented themselves over the years in their successful music careers.

So it’s no surprise that the two stars looked incredibly friendly and very much like old pals as they attended the launch of Jay Z’s new music streaming service Tidal on Monday night.

Rihanna, 27, and Madonna, 56, certainly appeared like the best of friends as they joked around for the cameras together at the Skylight Moynihan Station in New York.

And there may have been a nearly 30-year age gap between them , but it didn’t show as the Diamonds singer put her bare leg up over the 1980s pop icon playfully.

Rihanna looked the epitome of sassy chic as she went braless in a purple plunging blazer that not-so-subtly revealed her ample cleavage and chest tattoo.

Her retro but current ensemble was completed with a very short mini skirt in a matching print, which showed off her lean and toned pins perfectly as she cocked a leg around Madonna.

Adding some height to her already lofty frame, she finished her look with a pair of knitted white ankle boots with a towering heel, as well as a smattering of gold jewellery.

The Barbadian beauty’s raven tresses were piled up on her head in a unique oversized bun, her fringe down in a messy style.

Meanwhile, her older counterpart looked typically herself in a gothic-inspired figure-hugging black dress.

The singing superstars were among many other A-listers at the launch of Jay Z’s new streaming service.

Rihanna and Madonna attended along with the rapper himself, as well as Beyonce, Usher, Daft Punk, Arcade Fire, Jack White and Kanye West as they were revealed as co-owners of the subscription service, called Tidal.

Unlike rivals Spotify, the service will not have a free tier – meaning the musicians stand to make more money from it.

Alicia Keys said the artists hope Tidal will ‘forever change the course of music history’ and ensure the viability of the industry at Monday’s launch event in New York City.

The celebrities – which also included Nicki Minaj, Jason Aldean, Usher, Arcade Fire and deadmau5 – stood in a line, and in solidarity by mostly wearing black onstage as Keys spoke to the audience at Skylight at Moynihan Station in Manhattan. 

‘So we come together before you on this day, March 30th, 2015, with one voice in unity in the hopes that today will be another one of those moments in time, a moment that will forever change the course of music history.’

The membership-based service – similar to subscription service Spotify – will provide music and exclusive video content that users can stream on computers, tablets and smartphones or listen to offline.

Both Madonna and Rihanna, along with the other stars, signed a document up on stage at the huge announcement, as the high-profile owners of the music service.

After the event, Madonna posted a message to her millions of followers on Twitter and Instagram.

‘Tidal is not about consumption and greed! Its about protecting an art-form that is beloved to all of us MUSIC! #rebelhearts stand together for what they believe in!’ she wrote.

And the night didn’t end their for busy Rihanna, as she later went on to her best friend’s fashion launch, swapping her chic ensemble for something altogether more urban and funky.

The singer’s best friend Melissa Forde launched her bucket hat-focused clothing line on Monday in New York at Opening Ceremony.. 

Although she was scantily clad otherwise, Rihanna did remember to wear one of the designer’s new hats as she displayed plenty of cleavage in a plunging bralet and tiny denim shorts.

That headgear had a bright pink colour and a pattern of yellow pineapples printed on the slightly shiny fabric.

Rihanna wore hers with matching pink lipstick, square earrings, and loose hair down her back.

Below the neck, the FourFiveSeconds singer was impossible to ignore thanks to a flashy white coat over very little clothing.
