Stephen Mulhern unexpectedly hints at the ‘dark sides’ of the entertainment industry that have made him heartbroken and consider leaving the career he has pursued all his life: ‘The newcomers are making everything more disgusting and losing value!’

It is something that means everything to the ITV presenter

Catchphrase host Stephen Mulhern recently revealed he harbours a secret sadness about the entertainment industry.

Stephen, 47, started out as a Redcoat and magician at Butlin’s’ Minehead resort. Since then he’s gone from strength to strength, remaining booked and busy on shows such as Saturday Night Takeaway and Dancing On Ice.

However, he recently addressed the lack of old-school entertainers currently in the business, admitting that things just “aren’t the same” any more.

Catchphrase Stephen Mulhern on lack of ‘real entertainers’

Speaking back in June, he told The Times: “Most of our family holidays when I was growing up were at nearby seaside resorts such as Margate and Southend. Our first big trip was to Butlin’s in Minehead, Somerset, when I was 11.

“I loved it. I always wanted to be a Redcoat, and I was scouted in a Butlin’s talent show aged 16 after one of the acts failed to turn up. Butlin’s is a proper British institution.”

He then added: “Not wishing to sound like an old man, but entertainers are very few and far between now, even in places such as Tenerife and Las Vegas. There was real entertainment back then and it’s not the same any more.”

Stephen’s not looked back since getting his big break

Since getting his break when he was a teenager, Stephen hasn’t looked back.

He started his TV presenting career at Children’s ITV (CITV) in 2001, and stayed at the network to present programmes including Catchphrase and Dancing on Ice with Holly Willoughby.

Stephen told Butlin’s: “I’ve been so lucky, from kids shows and primetime to Saturday night TV, but if I had to pick one, it would be Catchphrase because it’s something I watched growing up and the team are amazing.”

He is returning to where his career all started with a new stage show

The presenter is returning to Butlin’s from autumn with a new show for guests.

Beyond Belief is set to treat guests to “magic, illusions, games, and plenty of interaction”, according to the chain’s website.

Stephen Mulhern’s reflections on the state of the entertainment industry are a poignant reminder of the changing times. As he reminisces about his days as a Redcoat at Butlin’s and the thrill of performing for audiences, it’s clear that he longs for the days of old-school entertainers who knew how to captivate and delight. In today’s digital age, where social media influencers and reality TV stars dominate the scene, the traditional art of entertainment seems to have taken a backseat. Stephen’s words echo a sentiment shared by many who yearn for the authentic charm and magic of live performances. But despite his concerns, Stephen has carved out a successful career for himself, moving effortlessly between kids’ shows, primetime TV, and Saturday night entertainment. His passion for entertaining shines through in everything he does, whether it’s hosting Catchphrase or dazzling audiences with illusions on stage. And now, as he prepares to return to Butlin’s with a brand new show, the excitement is palpable. Beyond Belief promises to bring back the wonder and joy of classic entertainment, with a mix of magic, interactive games, and mind-bending illusions. It’s a nod to the past while embracing the future, a reminder that the art of entertainment will always have a place in our hearts. So as we look forward to Stephen’s upcoming show, let’s take a moment to appreciate the rich history of entertainment and the power it has to unite and uplift us. In a world that’s constantly changing, some things, like the magic of live performance, will always remain timeless. And for that, we can be truly grateful.
