Disney has officially pulled the plug on its latest Star Wars venture, The Acolyte.
As per Deadline, The Acolyte will no longer be continuing with a second season.
This comes after consistent decrease of ratings, negative responses and criticism from fans.
The show first debuted on Disney+ in early June, with its cancellation being announced just over a month after its debut which sparked a divided response between critics and fans.
The Acolyte creator Leslye Headland recently expressed her interest in continuing the show’s story for a second season and even went as far as to mention a potential third and fourth season.
While talking to Entertainment Weekly in late June, Headland stated that she and her team put “everything” into the show’s first season, however, fans weren’t as convinced.
She also added that despite putting “everything” into the first outing, “enough nods” were ensured to keep fans wanting “to see a second season” of the show.
“I think you should put everything you can into the first season and give the audience a nice resolution that feels satisfying, but enough nods to mysteries that you would want to see a second season.”
Although critics seemed to enjoy the show judging by its Rotten Tomatoes score, criticism from fans across the web said otherwise, as did the show’s “overall viewership”.
As per Disney’s viewership data, the show’s debut landed itself on Nielsen’s Top 10 originals chart during its premiere week at the #7 spot.
It later climbed up to the #6 spot the week after.
However, as viewership declined, so did its run on the chart – dropping out of the Top 10 by week 3.
Its finale is also believed to be the lowest-viewed Star Wars spinoff series finale of all time.
Its low viewership and high cost to produce are the main reasons to it being cancelled.

In response to the news, CoveredGeekly audience members were quick to share their reactions.

“Terrible attempt to make Star Wars join woke culture… show is just too bad and destroyed Star Wars canon concepts,” another added.
