He added that an overwhelming majority of Canadians supported the Duke and Duchess of Sussex in 2020 and they would fight to keep their position in the Royal Family.

Staunch monarchist Garry Toffoli, the Executive Director of the Canadian Royal Heritage Trust, said he and many other Canadians have a strong connection to the Sussexes.

He added that Canadians would fight for the Sussexes to keep their position in the Royal Family, amid rumours the couple risk losing their place in the line of succession.

Toffoli said: “The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have maintained a closer connection to Canada than have the Prince and Princess of Wales.

“Canadians remember that the problems regarding the Sussexes began when the Palace (wrongly, I believe) prevented them from living in Canada with royal security and carrying out part-time royal duties.

“The overwhelming majority of Canadians supported the Sussexes’ plans at the time.”

He continued to tell The Express: “In one poll in early 2020 over 60 per cent wanted Prince Harry to become the next Governor General of Canada.”

When Prince Harry and Meghan stepped back as senior royals, they immediately settled in Vancouver Island.

However, without adequate security, the couple fled to the US in March 2020.

Their plans to take on semi-official roles were thwarted by the late Queen Elizabeth II, King Charles and Prince William at the Sandringham Summit.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex settled in Los Angeles at Tyler Perry’s home before moving into the Montecito mansion they currently live in with their two children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet.

Despite the couple’s move to the United States, Harry and Meghan still hold a place in their hearts for Canada.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle will be travelling to Canada for the Invictus Games in February 2025, due to take place in Vancouver Whistler.

They travelled to the North American country earlier this year to promote the upcoming Games.
