David Beckham may not be the first person you think of when it comes to gardening, but the former footballer has recently been showing off his beginner skills,
planting Queen of Sweden David Austin shrub roses in his garden.
The dad-of-four recently took to Instagram to share a video – filmed by his wife,
Victoria Beckham – of himself planting a rose bush alongside a fence, presumably within the grounds of his beautiful Cotswolds home.
The video showed David digging feverishly at the grass (without socks and shoes on!) to create a hole in which to pop his shrub rose, with commentary from both himself and Victoria along the way.
While there were plenty of comments from David’s 87.9 million followers sharing advice on how to improve his skills,
we were a little more focused on the stunning shrub rose he was planting, with its silky pink flowers, known as the Queen of Sweden.
And if you feel the same and want to know more about the beautiful plant, here’s everything you need to know about David and Victoria Beckham’s favourite new flower…
Queen of Sweden shrub rose: what you need to know
Queen of Sweden English shrub roses are undeniably stunning, beginning life as a small, apricot-coloured bulb, before blossoming into a neatly arranged cup of a flower that is the perfect shade of soft pink. The rest of the shrub is also full of lush green foliage. So we can certainly see why the Beckhams chose it for their home.
Interestingly, this plant was bred by the David Austen nursery in Wolverhampton in 2004. The English shrub rose was named after the Queen of Sweden, as a result of a treaty being signed between Sweden and the UK – so it has a pretty significant meaning behind it.

But what of the plant itself? Keen fans of the Queen of Sweden shrub rose likely adore this lovely flower thanks to its distinct scent, with many noting that it has a soft and unique myrrh fragrance.
Its flowering period begins around late spring, and it should flower until the very first frost of the autumn/winter season, so you’re likely to get a good few months of enjoyment from it.
How to take care of a Queen of Sweden shrub rose
These beautiful plants are relatively low maintenance and should function well in most gardens thanks to their hardy nature.
Most advice suggests that Queen of Sweden shrub roses can be planted either in mixed garden borders or in containers, thriving equally well in both – meaning they should suit your outside space, whatever it looks like.
Queen of Sweden plants can grow pretty high and wide, with most reaching up to 4ft tall and 2-3ft wide. So they make for an excellent choice if you are planning on creating a flowering hedge, or really want to fill out the borders of your garden.
They also do best in areas where they can get plenty of sunlight, which is important to note if you’re looking to plant yours this season. Experts also advise deadheading older blooms to ensure that new ones are able to come through.
And as with many plants, they tend to thrive in rich, fertile soil with adequate moisture (though they shouldn’t be saturated).
Another tip David Beckham himself picked up from his keen followers, was to press on the outside walls of the containers these roses come in, to be able to easily get the Queen of Sweden shrub out of the pot without too much pulling.
In fact, he tried the trick on his Instagram, and revealed that it worked seamlessly! In the video, he is seen tapping on the sides of the pot repeatedly, before effortlessly lifting the plant out of its pot, after which, he said, ‘who knew?’
We don’t know about you, but we’ve certainly been inspired by David’s gardening escapades to plant our own stunning Queen of Sweden plants in our outdoor space this summer.
