Curry Becomes First Player With Multiple 40-Point Games as Warriors Cap Perfect 3-0 Roadtrip
For the second time on this road trip, Stephen Curry eclipsed 40 points,
Scoring 42 points in the Warriors’ 130-102 victory over the New Orleans Pelicans on Monday.
Curry became the first player with multiple 40-point games this season.
The Warriors went a perfect 3-0 on the trip and handed the Pelicans their first loss of the season.
CURRY’S BLAZING HOT START
Stephen Curry was scorching hot in the opening quarter, scoring 16 of the Warriors’ first 18 points.
Reunited with his pick-and-roll partner, Draymond Green, Curry opened the game by cutting to the basket for a layup off a Green assist.
A couple of minutes later, Green again found Curry for a left-wing triple. After generating his first couple of baskets with off-ball movement, the Splash Brother hit two deep jumpers, creating off-the-bounce and launching over the outstretched arms of the defense.
Curry finished the quarter with 16 points on 5-for-7 shooting and 3-for-5 from behind the arc.
ROOKIES ON THE BOARD
Rookies Trayce Jackson-Davis and Brandin Podziemski scored their first NBA buckets on Monday. Late in the first quarter, Jackson-Davis — the 57th pick of the 2023 NBA Draft — got onto the score column with a dunk out of the pick-and-roll with Chris Paul. Late in the third quarter, he threw the ball off the glass to himself for a two-hand flush. On the next possession, he defended Zion Williamson one-on-one on the block and forced a turnover. The rookie big man finished with 13 points, nine rebounds and a game-high four blocks in 19 minutes.
In the second quarter, Brandin Podziemski used a behind-the-back dribble to catch fellow rookie Jordan Hawkins slipping and finished with his dominant left hand. Podziemski scored five points, grabbed eight rebounds, dished out two assists and was a plus-15 in 22 minutes.
THIRD QUARTER DUBS
Through four games, the Warriors have outscored their opponents by 47 points in the third quarter. Even in their opening night loss, the Dubs scored 40 points in the third — outscoring Phoenix by 21 points in the frame. On Monday, the Warriors scored 39 points in the third quarter — outscoring the Pelicans by 18 — capped by a 13-1 run to end the stanza. The Dubs shot 55 percent from the field in the quarter (16/29 FG) and held the Pelicans to 35 percent shooting (7/20 FG).
STRENGTH IN NUMBERS
On the back end of a back-to-back, the Warriors were a bit short-handed without Klay Thompson (right knee soreness) and Jonathan Kuminga (left knee contusion). Filling the void, Moses Moody stepped into the starting lineup and thrived, with his eighth double-digit scoring game in 15 career starts (13 points on 5-for-8 shooting).
The Warriors bench added 51 points, eclipsing 40 bench points for the second consecutive game.
