Jennifer Garner was reportedly left feeling like a “pawn” during the breakup of Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck’s marriage.
Months of speculation came to an end on Tuesday night when the world-famous singer, 55, officially filed for divorce from the Hollywood A-list actor, 52, right around the time of the couple’s second wedding anniversary.
In the days leading up to the divorce Affleck had been reportedly spending an increased amount of time with his ex-wife actress Jennifer Garner who had in the past played ‘marriage counsellor’ to the couple.
Friends of Garner, 52, reportedly said she was forced to ‘play mediator’ in an attempt to smooth the couple’s issues and preserve Affleck’s sobriety. “Jen feels slightly used as a pawn in J-Lo’s bid to repair her marriage,” the source said. “She doesn’t believe it was intentional.”
“But when Jen realized her ex-husband’s marriage was past the point of salvation, her only concern was Ben’s well-being and sobriety,” they told the Mail. The source told the paper that friends of actress Garner were “extremely unimpressed” by how J-Lo leaned on Affleck throughout their divorce, despite how complicated things were for the trio.
“She was put in the middle and her friends think – no matter how you look at it – a man’s ex-wife should never have to play mediator in a divorce from his new wife,’ they said. “Especially when said wife was a big love who Jen was compared to throughout their 13-year marriage. She is happy that Ben is now happy.”
Affleck, who has battled alcoholism and gambling addiction for decades, has three kids with Garner, Violet, 18, Finn, 15, and Samuel, 12. The pair wed in 2005 and divorced in 2018. She is said to be focusing on co-parenting their children. It’s reported by TMZ that J-Lo is reportedly “heartbroken” over her decision to divorce Ben. A source close to the star told People Magazine that she was ready to “move on” after spending most of the summer apart from her husband amid swirling divorce rumours.
The insider revealed to the publication: “She tried really hard to make things work and is heartbroken,” before adding: “The kids are a top priority, as they always have been.” Lopez shares 16-year-old twins Max and Emme with ex-husband Marc Anthony. The showbiz couple secretly began dating in 2003, following Affleck’s appearance in J-Lo’s iconic music video, Jenny From the Block but split up after a year. They got back together in 2021, tying the knot in Las Vegas in July 2022.
