Zahara Jolie-Pitt is the adopted daughter of Angelina Jolie, a famous Hollywood actress and humanitarian.
Zahara was born in Ethiopia in 2005, and her biological mother, Mentewab Dawit Lebiso, gave her up for adoption when she was only six months old.
Zahara was suffering from malnutrition and a life-threatening illness, and Lebiso could not afford to take care of her. She hoped that Zahara would find a better life with a loving family.
In July 2005, Jolie visited an orphanage in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, where she met Zahara and felt an instant connection with her.
She decided to adopt her and bring her to the United States, where she joined Jolie’s other adopted son, Maddox, from Cambodia.
Jolie later married Brad Pitt, a famous Hollywood actor and producer, who also adopted Zahara and Maddox as his own children.
Together, they had three more biological children: Shiloh, Knox, and Vivienne. They also adopted another son, Pax, from Vietnam.
Zahara grew up in a privileged and multicultural environment, surrounded by her parents and siblings. She traveled the world with them and witnessed their humanitarian work in various countries.
She learned to speak several languages, including English, French, Amharic, and Arabic. She developed a passion for music and art, and showed a talent for singing and playing the piano.
She also became interested in her Ethiopian heritage and culture, and visited her birth country several times with Jolie.
However, Zahara’s life was not without challenges and difficulties. In 2016, Jolie filed for divorce from Pitt, citing irreconcilable differences.
The divorce was followed by a bitter custody battle over their six children, which lasted for several years.
The media reported on the allegations of abuse, infidelity, substance abuse, and mental health issues that plagued the former couple.
Zahara had to cope with the stress and trauma of seeing her parents fight and separate. She also had to deal with the public scrutiny and attention that came with being a celebrity child.
Meanwhile, Lebiso never stopped thinking about Zahara. She lived in poverty and hardship in Ethiopia, working as a maid and struggling to survive. She had two more children with another man, but he abandoned them.
She regretted giving up Zahara for adoption, but she knew it was the best decision for her at the time. She hoped that Zahara was happy and healthy with Jolie and Pitt.
In 2017, Lebiso made a public plea to Jolie to let her have some contact with Zahara.
She spoke to the Daily Mail, a British newspaper, and expressed her desire to speak to her daughter and see her face.
She said that she did not want to take Zahara away from Jolie or interfere with her life, but she just wanted to let her know that she was alive and loved her very much.
“I just want her to know that I am alive and here and long to be able to speak with her,” Lebiso said, adding “I do not want my daughter back but just to be in contact with her and be able to call her up and talk with her.”
She acknowledged that Jolie had been a better mother to Zahara than she ever could be, and that Zahara had a life that she could never give her.
She praised Jolie for raising Zahara well and giving her opportunities that she never had.
“She has been with her since she was a baby, but that does not mean I do not miss her. I miss her all the time. I think about her every day and long to hear her voice or see her face,” Lebiso said.
“I would like Zahara to know she has a mother who loves her as much as Angelina. I know her life is with Angelina is in another country and she speaks another language than me.
She has a life that I could never give her, but I would still like to have some contact. I would like to see her face.
She has grown into a beautiful woman, and I am so proud of her. My heart bursts because I am so proud,” Lebiso gushed.
Lebiso’s plea came at a time when Jolie and Pitt were still locked in a legal battle over their children’s custody and welfare.
It was not clear whether Jolie had ever responded to Lebiso or allowed her to communicate with Zahara.
Zahara’s story is one of love and loss, of hope and pain, of belonging and identity.
It is a story of two mothers who love their daughter in different ways: one who gave birth to her and gave her up for adoption; one who adopted her and gave her a new life.
