Golden State Warriors star Stephen Curry is not the only individual from his household who shares an affinity for sports.
His father, Dell Curry, himself is a renowned NBA legend who devoted over 16 years to the league while his brother, Seth, has also established a name for himself in the world of basketball.
Another athlete amongst this circle of mega achievers is Sonya Curry, Stephen’s mother, who made quite a name for herself in volleyball as a student athlete.
Sonya’s history was once again brought to the limelight thanks to a recent incident.
Before the Warriors’ clash against the New Orleans Pelicans, Stephen Curry engaged in a practice session, with his 11-year-old daughter Riley sitting courtside.
During this, Curry passed the basketball to his eldest ‘volleyball style’. Consequently, Riley responded with their quick instinct and passed the ball back to Steph rather comfortably.
The four-time NBA champion took a step backward and dropped the ball through the hoop.
As the clip started to make the rounds of the internet, it would have been hard for hardcore Warriors fans to not be reminded of Riley’s grandmother Sonya. The latter’s interest in volleyball during her childhood days is what allowed her to receive a scholarship into Virginia Tech. Her skill set also allowed her to try her hand in other things like track and field and even basketball. While she never chose to pursue any of it in a professional manner, her sports legacy has fortunately been carried forward through her children.
Unlike her father, Riley Curry is someone who seldom wants to get involved with anything basketball related. During an interview back in 2021, Stephen Curry revealed the reason for the same as he stated that his eldest got drawn away from the game due to the injuries that one would sustain while playing it.
“She’s seen me have so many injuries and coming home with the hand cast and the b**t pad and sprained ankles and all that” said Curry. “So I said ‘I’m sorry I scared you away from the game on that front.’” Despite this, Riley has taken to her grandmother and continues to show a keen interest in volleyball.
