Golden State Warriors guard Stephen Curry has no current political aspirations, but as he told CBS, he might be willing to run for the nation’s highest office if it can help him make an impact in people’s lives.
‘Maybe, I have an interest in leveraging every part of my influence for good in the way that I can,’ Curry told CBS Mornings when asked if he could envision himself running for President some day.
‘So, if that’s the way to do it, then – I’m not going to say the presidency but if politics is a way that you can create meaningful change or if there’s another way outside of politics.’
Curry was promoting a new children’s book he’s written, I Am Extraordinary, which is his effort to teach kids to value themselves as unique individuals.
He wouldn’t be the first NBA player to try his hand at politics.
Former NBA journeyman center Enes Kanter Freedom plans to run for office in 2028, when the Turkish-
born US citizen will become eligible, and New York Knicks legend Bill Bradley famously served as a US senator from New Jersey from 1979 until 1997.
Bradley even ran for President in 2000 before ultimately losing to Vice President Al Gore in the primary.
Curry and his wife Ayesha are both heavily involved with charities. A practicing Christian and son of former NBA Sixth Man of the Year Dell Curry, the Warriors star has supported programs aimed at helping children in underfunded Oakland schools and underfed youth in the Bay Area.
He’s also been a proponent of racial equality, drawing the ire of many conservatives by kneeling in a ‘Black Lives Matter’ t-shirt during the national anthem in 2021.
Curry also infuriated then-President Donald Trump in 2017 when he publicly admitted he didn’t want to go to the White House after winning the second of his four NBA titles earlier that year.
Championship teams are traditionally invited to the White House, but Curry’s Warriors were disinvited by Trump after the two-time MVP criticized the controversial President publicly.
‘Going to the White House is considered a great honor for a championship team,’ Trump tweeted. ‘Stephen Curry is hesitating, therefore invitation is withdrawn!’
At the time, LeBron James rushed to Curry’s defense on Twitter (now X), writing, ‘U bum @StephenCurry30 already said he ain’t going! So therefore ain’t no invite. Going to White House was a great honor until you showed up!’
